Don’t Forget to Advance Your Image Along with Your Career
Are you “suited” for continued success? Ninety-three percent of senior executives polled said, “someone’s style of dress at work influences his or her chances of being promoted.”¹That power suit that got you promoted in the early 90’s won’t help now. Keep your professional image as sharp as your skills by following these 5 basic business rules:
- Size up the situation. In this fast-paced environment, things change rapidly, including our sizes. Take advantage of the situation and buy a wardrobe that fits you now!
- Think outside of the box. Those unstructured shirts and jackets with thick shoulder pads have you boxed in. Light padding, seaming, and darts add femininity to your professional look.
- Broaden your base. Tapered pants make your target too narrow. Straight and full pant legs will de-emphasize your hips for a more flattering figure.
- Assess your bottom line. Calf-length skirt suits just don’t add up. Line up your hemline at or right below the knee to give your body the appropriate balance.
- Maximize your assets. Outdated accessories can be a liability. Keep accessories in your assets column by adding key pieces from the current season’s trends to your wardrobe.
¹The 2007 survey was developed by Office Team and was conducted among 150 senior executives at 1,000 of the nation’s largest companies.
