Networking Style — 4 things you must do

Recently I spoke to a professional group on the how to network.  Okay, I didn’t cover the entire topic by myself.  Dion Harding from 2 Be Inspired covered how to network and I covered appearance.  I thought I would share four easy image tips with those of you who are in networking mode and headed to an event to network for a new job, a new client or a new man.  Do AT LEAST these 4 things:

1.  Prepare what you will wear in advance. — This is not a couple of hours before hand, this should be at least a couple of days.  You may already have set in your mind that you will wear your favorite power suit or that stunning blazer so you are all set.  Wrong!  You should get it out of your closet and try it on.  Make sure it still fits like it’s supposed to fit, that’s it’s clean and the pieces you plan to wear with it are all in good shape and fit right.  Even if it is still in the cleaner’s bag, take it out and try it on.  Believe it or not, sometimes things shrink in the cleaners and mysteriously buttons get lost.  Don’t wait until you have only an hour before the event to find out that the outfit that makes you feel fearless is not fit to wear.

2.  Do your hair and nails. — If you are thinking why do I need to say this then you’ve obviously never been to some off the networking events that I’ve been too.  There are the hairstyles that women have had since the 70’s, nobody told them that this makes them look outdated and unable to adapt to change.  There are the women who don’t do anything with their hair.  They don’t seem to know that this means they don’t care about details.  And then there are the women with the fingernails that are so long you’re afraid to get close to them.  People think they are Prima Donnas and won’t will expect to be waited on hand and foot.

3.  Don’t stink!!! — I’m so serious.  Just because you love Narciso Rodriguez Eau De Parfum doesn’t mean everyone else does too.  Especially after you have sprayed it heavily behind your ears, on your neck and on your wrist…and then there was that “once all over” spritz.  Once our noses get used to a scent, it takes more application for us to smell it but not for those around us.  Don’t miss out on talking to a key person because they hate your scent or worse yet…their allergic.

4.  Show the world your pearly whites. — Nobody wants to talk to the mean person in the room.  Think about it, the person with the scowl on their face is usually only talking to the person they came to the event with.  Don’t let that person be you.  Put a bright and inviting smile on your face and see how many folks you attract.  Hey, don’t forget to pop a mint in your mouth just in case people get too close.
