I was “chatting” with a group of women the other day. One of the more conservative and less fashionable women in the room said that “trendiness in the office is inappropriate and women who dress trendy tend to make less and get promoted slower.” I should have done the t-h-r-e-e second pause before responding but in normal fashion, what came into my head came right out of my mouth — “THAT’S NOT TRUE!” And it’s not.
Now I probably didn’t respond appropriately but really, I didn’t want women to walk away and think they still had to dress like they did in the 90s to get ahead in the office. Plus, dressing like the 90s says you are out of touch; but let me stay on course. The woman used trendiness and sexiness interchangeably but she didn’t seem to realize that they are not the same. Now there are some very sexy trends and apparel that you want to avoid in the office but there are MANY that are a perfect fit for work and play. So here are five Spring trends that do double duty:
1. Biker Jackets — These great jackets are perfect for the open road and the path to the corner office. Pair this tweed version with leggings and a cute tee for play. For the office, pair the jacket with black slacks and a top that gives you a little pop of color and you will be suited for success.
2. Flowers – You should get flowers every day and, if you wear them, it will help you keep your career blooming. Pair this floral tie top with white shorts or skirt for weekend lunch with the girls. For the office, wear it under your power suit so you can compete with the boys but still feel like a girl.
3. Metallic — With this trend, you can truly put the “petal to the metal” and accelerate your career. Choose one of these two metallic pump versions and they will work perfectly with your after 5 dresses. For the office, they will take you appropriately to new heights when paired with classic slacks and suits.
4. Neutral — This is the perfect canvas for creating your career path. Splash lots of bright jewelry on it for play. In the office, it can be the mate to the male’s version of casual Friday (those khakis and button downs); just grab a cute cardigan to finish off the office look.
5. Asymetrical — Don’t forget your life is more than just work so don’t forget to have some balance. This asymetrical shawl reminds you that you are weighed down on one end but it is so fun to wear. Pair it with bright colored cotton pants, my pick would be yellow ones from NY&Co. For work, wear it with a textured pencil skirt and a fitted white top.
Now enjoy being trendy at work and at play.
