Just as the colors of the leaves change when the weather gets a bit chilly so should the fabrics and patterns found in your closet. With summer you have seersucker and madras. With fall you should be thinking of tweeds, wools, and hounds tooth. Take advantage of the fact that the hard and fast rules of not mixing patterns and fabrics is beginning to go away. Just as I love to mix gingham and stripes I encourage men to consider mixing patterns and fabrics this fall as well.

A few standards are the wool trouser. This pant can be found in a number of colors and weights. I suggest charcoal and brown for this year’s autumn season. Kim has mentioned that “brown is the new black” and I couldn’t agree more. The slacks that are part of this week’s set can be found in both brown and charcoal. Feel free to push the issues a bit by pairing these slacks with a smart wool tie in either a striped or checked pattern.
As far as blazers go a hounds tooth check or tweed blazer should be another staple in most men’s wardrobe. If you are going to wear a strong-patterned blazer be sure to tone it down just a bit with a solid sweater or shirt. You can never underwhelm anyone with a pattern but please don’t try to do all of the patterns at once. Browns, and grays are two of the more versatile colors so you can definitely brighten them up by pairing either of them with pinks or light blues.
One final article that you should wear this fall is the suede lace-up oxford. Brown is the must have color and can easily be worn with all colors except, of course, black. Again it’s about textures and the suede lace-up is an easy way to keep a smart look without going overboard. Most oxfords will also come in either a round toe or wing-tip. Either one of these is a great look. As always, fashion is less about what you wear and more about how you wear it. So get out of your comfort zone this fall and let fashion happen.
Fashionably Yours,
Mason
