This makes sense:

Fall 2009 Trends – Part IV: Skinny Belts

So far we’ve got an entire outfit going here:  Over-the-Knee Boots, Leggings, Boyfriend Sweater and now a belt to accentuate the waist.  Skinny belts are going to be big with boyfriend sweaters but on dresses and jackets too.

Just do me ONE HUGE FAVOR…don’t wear a skinny belt that is too skinny for your body.  How will you know?  We’ll it is likely that the belt will be almost hidden if it is too skinny.

Now one other favor, I think this one is huge too.  Don’t prop that belt above a protruding stomach.  It makes your belly look larger and even more prominent.  What to do?  Not belt at all.  It really is an option.  You don’t have to follow every trend.  You really should only select the ones that fit with your personal style and are flattering for your body type.

Hell bent on wearing it?  Get it large enough so that you can wear it loosely on the outside of sweaters and jackets.  Make sure you wear it at a point that doesn’t make you look too long or too short waisted.  Please, don’t let fashion take you out of proportion.

Now the skinny on what kind.  You can always do a basic color but how fun to do an animal print.  It will add texture and interest to the outfit.  Real leather or fake?  Belts can run you from $5 t0 hundreds of dollars depending on the quality.  I like leather belts because of their flexibility. They tend to wrap around your body more easily not as stiff as leather-like belts.  But if it is only for one outfit and doesn’t justify the cost, go with the fake.
